I travel through Evie on the northeast coast of mainland Orkney, a place I haunt like a spirit with unfinished business. I go by a little white cottage perched on a slope with a stunted hedge and stone wall surrounding it. I glimpse the chimney pots, and my heart aches. Here is the one that got away, this house overlooking the island of Eynhallow between the mainland and Rousay.
